Two men were killed over this weekend; both stabbed to death around the same time in Concepcion Village, Corozal. Shockingly, the two incidents were unrelated. We’ll start with 34-year-old Daniel Cano, who had recently moved back to Belize after living in Chetumal, Mexico. Cano was killed around 12am yesterday, reportedly by a man he just met. The incident occurred at the house of Cano’s friend, Antonio Anderson. Anderson stated that the motive may have been jealousy. He believes the assailant, who is his nephew, thought Cano was having an affair with his girlfriend, since she was also at the house at the time.
Antonio Anderson, Friend of Deceased: “We were having a good moment and we were drinking a couple beers and he was there alright and okay when the young man got there which is my nephew. He arrived with his car and then he entered the house and he was there and I even presented the two of them. Two of my sisters were watching TV and the guy that did this he went to see one of my sisters-in-law because they have a baby. We were drinking and the man told me ‘I’m going home.’ and I told him okay. He told me ‘Give me two more beers, one for the way and one to drink when I get home.’ and I gave him the two beers. I have a bench outside my house and he was sitting there talking to my nephew, so they were talking and I told the man ‘I’m going for some cigarettes.’ and I entered my house and then my wife was coming out. When she was coming out I thought she was going to the bathroom so I left the cigarettes and I came out, when I came out I saw that the deceased was with my wife, he was standing with a piece of stick and then I saw he couldn’t move and I asked him ‘What happened to you Daniel?’ and he didn’t answer me and then I saw him fall. Before I saw him fall I saw when my nephew was coming towards him so I pushed him and I told him ‘If you came here only to do trouble leave my house.’ I chased him. When the man fell I got in a hurry and I went to see what happened and when he fell he only told me two times ‘he stabbed me.’ Maybe he thought that the deceased went to see his girlfriend or something and got jealous because before he left he told one of my sisters-in-law that three sticks were left and he said ‘tomorrow we’re going to drink it.’”
Reporter: So maybe he got jealous.
Antonio Anderson, Friend of Deceased: “Yeah I think he got jealous.”
Anderson and other neighbors tried to assist Cano to the hospital, but he passed away while receiving treatment. Anderson’s nephew, Jesus Gabino, who is from Paraiso Village, fled the scene. Cano had no kids, and his sister stated that he was not the type of person to cause trouble.
