Gales Point native, Jamal Galves, better known as “the Manatee Man”, was presented with the Global Humane Hero Award. This award is geared at acknowledging individuals, who work in the protection and conservation of animals. Galves has been promoting the welfare and safety of the Antillean manatees since he was eleven years old. With over twenty years of experience in the field, Galves says that now he is working on creating a communication network which enables people to contact the correct person when they encounter an injured manatee.
The winner was selected by the Wolfgang Kiessling International Prize for Species Conservation.
