On Tuesday we told you about the female manatee that was killed after she was hit by a boat near the Marine Parade area of Belize City.. Experts believe that because the manatee was lactating that she had a calf with her. The Fisheries Department along with Clear Water Marine Research Institute has set out to try to locate the calf. Up to news time, there are no signs of the calf. Several manatees have been killed by boat over the past years. It was estimated that the manatee population is about 1,000 but a survey to determine the exact number will be conducted. That information, Jamal Galvez, says will play a crucial role in protecting the animal.
