Also in the Belize District, Maskall Village is facing increasing flooding conditions. The road running through the village is flooded at several points, and the yards of several villagers have begun to flood. We spoke with the Village Chairman Ammon Brackett, who said that the village council is working to prepare for worsening conditions. Brackett noted that he has been working closely with the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), on those preparations.
Ammon Brackett, Village Chairman: “Presently, we are witnessing some areas that were not usually flood but so far we have at least three areas on the road that is completely flooded. And we have about four yards, properties, that are flooded where the occupants cannot come out without entering water. But besides that, water is still raising gradually but so far we haven’t had anyone who needed to go to the shelter, at least so far. Actually, even before the weather I’ve been in constant contact with Miss Malik from NEMO. So we’ve been relaying messages to NEMO through Miss Malik. Even when it comes to Bomba, I’ve been relaying messages to Ms Malik and I’m staying in contact with the villagers. So far they have been of very good help to us, providing us with information and as we speak there’s a truck working on a part of Bomba Road that is breaking away.”
Brackett called on all villagers to be vigilant and move to a shelter if necessary. Maskall has an estimated population of fifteen hundred people.
