Mayor Wagner Sticking to his guns on decision to make Albert Vaughn City Administrator

While the councilors may be seeking to reverse Vaughn’s appointment, City Hall’s head honcho, Mayor Bernard Wagner, says he’s sticking with the decision. As we reported, Wagner had already indicated to the group that it was within his purview to select a suitable candidate. Despite doubts and questions over Vaughan’s qualifications and his ability to carry out the duties of City Administrator, Wagner seems to be unfazed. The three-time mayor spoke to Love News earlier today about the situation and expressed the need for the council to work in unison.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “I actioned the recommendations of the interviewing panel in really appointing Alber Vaughn as the City Administrator and now I will take that, that I have actioned for ratification by the council members. That is the normal course of business. I would action it and I would take it for ratification. I’m anticipating that I will get the full support of my council. Ups and downs, you’ll never agree on everything but it’s how you navigate that and have respect for each other and at the end of the day we are always here to serve the people. The business of the people is important for all of us. I do believe that and so let’s see.”

Our newsroom also attempted to get a comment from Belize City Councillor Javier Castellanos, one of the six councilors looking to challenge the decision.  When we reached out to him yesterday for a comment, he hung up on us. Today, however, while he did comment on the matter, he only stated that the deliberations at the City Council are private and confidential.

Javier Castellanos, Belize City Councilor: “I have two things I would like to say. There is deliberations, deliberations and discussions at confidence. Decisions will be public so let the decision be public when the decision is made.”

Vaughan has gone on record to say that he is not concerned about the letter or the remarks being made about his qualifications.
