There is much more politics to share with you tonight including the recent scandal that Shyne Barrow found himself in a few days ago; but, we’re not there yet. In terms of political divisions there are some that have aroused curiosity including yesterday’s announcement that Mark King is eyeing the Mesopotamia constituency. King was once in the good graces of the UDP when he had served one term in the Lake Independence division. After his term he later became persona non grata by the UDP. Clearly, he has not given up on the political dream as here we are again. Soon to be leader of the UDP Patrick Faber didn’t have much to say about King and his entry into what has been a UDP win for well over a decade.
Patrick Faber, Leader Elect, United Democratic Party: “I will merely refer you back to previous comments that I have made as it relates to that gentleman, we’ll leave it there. I don’t anticipate a dent from King. I think people have seen what he’s about and so I think that is enough said on that and this constituency has been one that has been a treasure of the UDP. It is for certain that Shyne has put in his work, he has done a lot of work, he is not one of those candidates – not that the UDP has any- but he is certainly not one of those candidates who has sat down and not done any kind of political work he has done that work masterfully and then again he is also supported by the indomitable Michael Finnegan who I am sure will lend his support and his actions to ensure that the seat is delivered once again for the UDP.”
As we have noted, the PUP is already claiming victory in the next general election. Opposition Leader John Briceno also chimed that the PUP will emerge victorious in Belmopan. It is quite an assertion but may not be too far fetched seeing that there are four candidates in Belmopan who may just take away votes from both John Saldivar and Oscar Mira. Anna Banner Guy who once served under the UDP at the Belmopan City Council is running independently and there is another independent who we’ll tell you about shortly. Before that though we get Faber’s insights on the race in Belmopan.
Patrick Faber, Leader Elect, United Democratic Party: “Not concerned that the PUP is claiming victory at all. You see this ,I listen to my friend the Leader of the Opposition but, this is what he has to say if he wants to convince people that he will win. He will have to claim some very important UDP seats that does not mean it is happening and I am told he’s talking about some poll to me. He has to say what he has to say but in Belmopan I have the utmost confidence that John Saldivar will deliver the seat once again. John has worked hard, he has worked tirelessly in his constituency I think that is evident. He has kept a relationship with the people. The candidate Anna Banner Guy who is a friend of our party and of course a former UDP City Councilor as well I think is a worthwhile candidate but as the party leader and you’ve said it she is somebody who I placed my confidence in but there is only one UDP you are either running for the party or you’re running against the party and so with all the love I have for Anna my support has got to be for the party’s candidate and while there might be some who feel – and to me undoubtedly there will be a few votes that will go away from our candidate as a result of another or a past UDP candidate being in the race but ultimately I think John has the kind of hold on Belmopan he is a son of the soil there and has that relationship with them despite whatever else you might think or you might say. I think he has the wherewithal to bring that constituency comfortably.”
