Closer to home- to the north, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo is registering an alarming increase of COVID-19 cases. COVID-19 restrictions there are being tighten and reports are that the state will go on a full lockdown. This will affect other states in the Yucatan Peninsula. We asked Prime Minister John Briceno if this latest development on the Mexican side will affect operations at the Corozal Free Zone.
John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “Cancun opened up and they kinda had it under control but right now Quintana Roo the virus is starting to get out of control and now they’re starting to talk about putting some more guidelines. When we opened up the Free Zone, and I spoke with people from the Free Zone they’re telling us that the media in Chetumal they were very critical of us but when they came to visit and saw the strict protocols that we put in place they were amazed and said that in the Free Zone we have better protocols than what they have in Chetumal. It is because of those protocols that managed to flatten the curve but the virus is still here and we need to be very careful.”
