A 42-year-old Mexican woman has been sentenced to fifteen years in prison after admitting to killing her spouse, Felix Alamilla. Annabella Kumul was before Justice Colin Williams on a charge of manslaughter which stems back from July 2014. Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson represented Kumul in court and spoke to our Court Reporter, Anita Nembhard.
SC Simeon Sampson, Attorney at Law: “She pleaded guilty to manslaughter. She stabbed her husband to death but the fatal wound was a wound to the leg so after serving five and a half years on remand she eventually offered a plea of manslaughter which the prosecution accepted.. She was sentenced this morning, fifteen years is max but having pleaded guilty for manslaughter she is automatically entitled to one third reduction leaving ten. Then she had served five an a half years in prison, minus another five and a half so she now serves four years and six months.”
Reporter: The Crown earlier was of the view that your client did not show in court remorse for her actions but through you, how true is this ? Is she remorseful because they shared two children.
SC Simeon Sampson, Attorney at Law: “That’s rubbish. Immediately as this man died she fled to the police station hollering “Lo mate. Lo mate. Lo mate.” “I killed him.” She could have fled to Mexico but she went to the police station and explained the circumstances how the matter happened.”
The incident occurred on Ambergris Caye on July 23, 2014, at around five-thirty in the morning. They had two children together who are in the care of relatives in Mexico.
