As we mentioned, the Ministry is aiming to build two hundred more starter homes for the new fiscal year, according to Evondale Moody, Engineering Coordinator within the ministry’s Project Execution Unit. Since the Briceno Administration took office in 2020, it has provided one hundred thirty-four Belizeans with homes. The project is a part of the government’s manifesto promise to build 10,000 low-income homes within its five-year term. Moody says while the ministry is behind on that goal, they are expecting to hand over a total of 256 homes by March.
Evondale Moody, Engineering Coordinator, MIDH: “The idea is for us to try and match that same amount for the new fiscal year. For the remainder of this fiscal year which is 2022/2023 we have about thirty more homes that we want to complete by March and based on our budget that we have requested for the new financial year 2023/2024 we are anticipating that we’ll try and match that same amount another 220 thereabout homes across the entire country. We are also looking at another option for grant funding from other funding agencies and if those would come through definitely the idea is to do more at least double that amount or more within this new financial years as well. So we have a high goal set for us to expand those homes to other individuals, to other needy individuals and our idea is to try and fulfill that mandate for the government as best as we can in the implementation of these homes.”
