Minister Balderamos Speaks on the In-Equality of Vaccines for African Nations

The USA’s first confirmed case of the Omicron variant was detected in a traveler, who had returned from South Africa in November. This is despite the global superpower, among others, imposing travel restrictions on several African nations – measures that many called unjust. And, today the Minister of Human Development Dolores Balderamos-Garcia weighed in on the issue and said the restrictions in her view were unacceptable.

Dolores Balderamos – Garcia, Minister of Human Development, Families and Indigenous People’s Affairs: “‘I heard an interview with a doctor from Abuja Nigeria and she was expressing the anger of the African community and also worldwide at what we call the vaccine inequality because you have vaccine inequality on the continent of Africa and yet because the South African scientists were able to isolate and identify the Omnicron variant some of those that do not have that variant their residents and citizens are being barred from travelling to Europe and to North America and other places . And that kind of vaccine inequality and unequal treatment especially of the continent of Africa is absolutely unacceptable if we are going to talk about reducing inequality and having more inclusivity in our fights against the various pandemics.”
