Minister Courtenay’s Departure: PUP Chairman Addresses Impact on Belize’s International Image

Will Minister Eamon Courtenay’s departure affect Belize’s image on the international stage? PUP Chairman Henry Charles Usher says he doesn’t believe it will. During his tenure, Courtenay was able to speak out on several international issues on the country’s behalf. He was seen as a sturdy voice within the Briceno Administration, which has sparked concerns as it relates to his replacement, Francis Fonseca. The Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Technology, who already has a full plate of responsibilities, is seen as soft-spoken, so will he be able to fill Courtenay’s shoes? Minister Usher says he believes Fonseca will continue to ensure Belize is seen as a shining example of a well-rounded nation with strong democratic values.

Henry Charles Usher, Min. of Constitutional & Political Reform and Religious Affairs: “Our foreign policy must be determined by the people of the country that is sovereign and that is Belize and certainly I don’t agree with the position we’ve taken sides. I think we have very good relations with the United States, we have very good relations with the United Kingdom, we have very good relations with all of our neighbours with Mexico, even with Guatemala even though we have this matter with the ICJ, with our friends in CARICOM, with our friend in Central America. It’s important for Belize to be out there advocating its interest on the international stage and the way you do it is just like you do it at home you know in terms of making friends, making alliances but also making sure that you stand on a principled position. So if one of your friends does something that is not right you have to call them out and I believe Belize is on record for calling them out.”

Ernesto Vasquez, Host, The Morning Show: Well you’re calling out or confronting them are different ways of doing it but again like I said that’s more a subject for maybe the next we’ll see like what will develop with the same Venezuela issue and Haiti.

Henry Charles Usher, Min. of Constitutional & Political Reform and Religious Affairs: “The new Foreign Minister is Honourable Francis Fonseca and I have to welcome him and congratulate him on his new portfolios. He has such a big ministerial portfolio now, very important matters and I’m sure that he would be here explaining those.”

Minister Courtenay demits officer at the end of this year.
