Minister of Infrastructure and Development, Julius Espat, is pleading with motorists across the country to exercise greater caution and responsibility on the roads. His urgent call comes in response to an increasing number of traffic incidents linked to reckless and inattentive driving. Speaking during last week’s budget debate, Espat emphasized that careless driving not only endangers lives but also contributes significantly to damage and deterioration of road infrastructure.

Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing: “Secondly I plead let us stop this drinking and driving. We are faced with serious accidents over there and a majority of it is because, people are drinking and driving and two we have a tendency in this country to not like to respect the law. We drive above 55 miles an hour that’s for sure, we text and we drive, we phone and we drive, we gossip and we drive, we do everything except paying attention to the road and the people and the animals that are in front of us. And I say we because I am part of it. We grew up in that culture where we feel like we are badman and we could drive faster and we can get away with it until we kill somebody or until one of our loved ones die and when one of our loved ones die it’s not a PUP nor it’s not a UDP, it’s a Belizean. It’s a Belizean and we have to take care of that.”
He encouraged all drivers to slow down, remain alert, and respect traffic regulations for the sake of public safety and national progress.
