The death of Mercedes Campos has sparked much public outrage with citizens calling for stronger penalties to be implemented against persons found guilty of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Our newsroom asked the Minister of Youth, Sports and Transport, Rodwell Ferguson, if he believes more checkpoints are needed on the highways during the weekends. Here is how he responded.
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Youth and Transportation: “As the Minister responsible for both Youths and Transportation, we cannot stop every incident. It’s a pity that it happens and I hope that the law will deal with the driver in accordance with the law. It’s very sad and I really apologize to the parents of that child. Guys they speed. There is checkpoint going on and no matter what you do, you cannot sometimes stop something from happening. Bu, as we progress in the Ministry of Transportation you’ll see a complete transformation as soon as we can get it into perspective.”
