After almost two months of being announced, the Government’s subsidy program for bakers which aims at keeping the controlled price of a 16-ounce pack of bread at a dollar and 75 cents, is expected to begin. The rise in the cost of goods such as flour had led bakers to request an increase in the cost of the controlled good. However, GOB had denied their request and instead announced that it would be launching a subsidy program to compensate bakers for the revenues they forego. According to Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai this week, the first set of subsidies is expected to be disbursed.
Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture: That matter was discussed again in Cabinet yesterday along with well our colleagues in Cabinet. But, Minister Coye and I have met. Our Director of Supplies Control will be calling the bakers to sit down and to implement the subsidy. That will happen this week.”
