Minister Marin Responds to Exchange of Words Between BTV’s Wil Maheia and Toledo East Representative Mike Espat

Minister Florencio Marin Junior aslo addressed the recent exchange of words between BTV’s Wil Maheia and Toledo East Area Representative, Mike Espat. In an Independence Day speech, Espat said that Maheia and the BTV were unnecessarily antagonizing the Guatemalan Armed Forces. In response, Maheia criticized Espat for not condemning the Guatemalans and chose to lash out at the BTV instead.  Rather than taking a side, Minister Marin told Love News that both Maheia and Espat had a right to express their views.

Florencio Marin Jr, Minister of National Defense: “Yes we have freedom of moment but as well I think the BTV knows that whenever they wanted to go and we are aware and we’ve been asked we provide escort but many times they go without us knowing so clearly then they catch us off guard and like I said the military has other commitments in the area. Belize is a country that freedom of movement any Belizean can travel anywhere within the country that I support we’re not changing. But as well Mike may have a reason too because what it did is that it gave the Guatemalans an opportunity to protest at the UN as well and I think you know that this issue is now being resolved at the ICJ so what’s the point. Whichever which way freedom of movement in this country we will defend.”

Additionally, Maheia had noted that it is time for Espat to retire from politics.
