And within the past 24 hours, there was another traffic incident. This one involved the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Michael Espat and a motorist. The incident occurred just after 8 o’clock last night on the Southern Highway near Bella Vista Village, Toledo. Our newsroom spoke with Minister Espat earlier today who stated that he had just left the village after assisting residents applying for GOB’s upcoming amnesty program. According to Minister Espat, shortly after getting on the highway, his vehicle began to experience mechanical issues and upon making a U-turn the motorcyclist collided with the driver’s side of his vehicle.
Michael Espat, Minister of State, Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment: “So, I left Bella Vista about 8, 8:05, 8:10, something like that there. While travelling along the road, the computer on the vehicle started to show me that I was having a problem with a tire. So, when I noticed one of the tires was down to about 27 but it started at 30 and then gradually, as I was moving it started going down and I said, oh I better turn back. So, I stopped and looked around. I didn’t see anybody. Nobody, so as I turned to go on the other side of the road then bang the motorcycle was on top of me. I don’t know how if he didn’t have good lights or whatever because he was coming very fast and he slammed straight into the driver’s side of the vehicle, on the door, the driver’s door. Well I actually called the doctor that I had with me. I had Dr. Zuniga with me. He was going towards Independence then I called him and he turned back and he assisted the fellow on the ground. You know the police gave a little trouble and he made them understand, I am a doctor and I have the right to check this patient, which he did to a certain extent, no? To satisfy himself that the damage was not more than the leg that he had under the motorcycle no? Well they stayed there for a while until we could get an ambulance to transport him to the clinic in Independence and from there they moved him on to Dangriga where he is still at because there is no ambulance available to take him to Belmopan or Belize.”
Reporter: So you didn’t suffer any injuries? You’re okay?
Michael Espat, Minister of State, Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment: “No, no. The vehicle had airbags on the passenger side and the driver side. Not the front. The front one did not explode because the impact was at the door so possibly that held my head. No? Basically.”
The motorcyclist who has been identified as Jose Daniel Garcia, a resident of Trio Village, suffered a broken leg and remains in stable condition at the Southern Regional Hospital.
