Minister Musa Says Police Will Begin to Crack Down on the Cayes

While the Police Department has been cracking down on crime in the city, out on the islands things have reportedly become a bit laxed. Several videos showing persons dancing and consuming alcohol at various restaurants out at the cayes have drawn the attention of the police department. Over the past weeks, police have had to close down a number of restaurants and bars that have not been adhering to the COVID-19 regulations in the city. And today, Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa said that the department will begin to crack down on establishments out on the islands despite them being the country’s main tourist destination.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “It’s a very tricky situation and we always have to strike that balance between having an attractive tourism product but at the same time coming down hard on individuals and patrons of restaurants who are not complying. And so we have discussed that that is something we have to have greater police presence or ay the very minimum JP presence to ensure that the patrons of these establishments are not breaching these protocols. I saw that the young lady has issued an apology but at the same time we cannot just allow it to go like that. So I will be speaking with the Commissioner  about that because I just saw it last night on the news to see what can be done against that particular establishment owner. Like you said we have been cracking down in other parts of the country. I know that in Belize City we have cracked down on two establishments already and so we have to continue this very aggressive effort and we’re just asking the proprietors of these establishments to comply. It’s very easy to comply with these regulations it’s just a matter of having people come in and dine. Yes they can have a beverage but at the same time you cannot be up and dancing and mingling like that in the establishment as though it’s a dance.”

Love News understands that the establishment Minister is referring to in his comment is Sit and Dip Bar located near the Split in Caye Caulker Village.
