While the Government of Belize has given the power to issue gun licenses to the newly appointed gun control board, there still has not been an audit of the licenses issued so far. This week, Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa, said that an initial retrospective audit will need to be done and agreed that the board needs to be subject to regular auditing.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “Definitely there has to be an initial audit by the board whether then that expands beyond to get some sort of an independent audit because I’m sure that certain information coming out of that audit will be divulged to the media and especially Jules Vasquez but of course we can’t give particulars in terms of names and that sort of thing but definitely how many licenses, how many licenses each individual may have that sort of thing what caliber. I know these are all things that the public would want to know and so that type of information I am certain within the first three months to six months will be disclosed to the public and we will then see whether it is necessary to do a further independent audit but I’m certain that this new board will be carrying out an audit. And I think six months is a reasonable time frame to have an audit, every six months yes.”
Last year the Government of Belize established the gun control board to remove the responsibility of issuing gun licenses from the Commissioner of Police.
