The media also asked Minister Eamon Courtenay about the livestock trade with Guatemala and Mexico. Minister Courtenay says that the prohibition to continue the informal trade last year cost the government millions of dollars. He says that PM John Briceno and his government says the livestock trade between the countries will be formalized for the benefit of the people and economy.
Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Foreign Minister of Belize: “It is not that it possibly cost us revenue last year it cost the country millions of dollars because of a stupid program and decision by the United Democratic Party which the Prime Minister of Belize John Briceno and his government corrected okay ? So let’s not get it twisted. Now on the question of cattle into Guatemala we specifically put on the table for negotiations under the partial scope agreement the addition of swine and pork and beef as products that would be covered by the partial scope agreement. So once the administrative commission is activated and the work starts that is one of the first issues that will be taken up, the formalization of the movement of cattle.”
