Minister of Health Gives Update on Vaccine Roll out

Close to thirty thousand residents have been vaccinated to date.  This accounts for seven percent of the population.  Speaking on these figures and the expressed fear in some corners, was the Minister of Health, Michel Chebat.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health: “Clearly it is important for as many of our citizens to get vaccinated as possible to do so. I think highlighting the fact that the vaccine saves lives is very important. The vaccine also will ensure that if you were able to get COVID that you would not have severe symptoms and so all around, the benefit of getting the vaccine far outweighs any reaction that you might experience.”

Reporter: I also know there’s a lot of fear also because of the recent commentary on the blood clot. Now how do you quell that fear among your citizenry? People who might be holding back because of this.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health: “We get a lot of guidance from WHO and from PAHO and in fact the studies that have been completed do not show that in fact the vaccine itself leads to any significant blood clotting. Now I understand that there is that concern but I think that the focus has to be on the benefit of the vaccination.”

Reporter: Minister on Friday you tabled a bill and your ministry has received criticism for this because people don’t understand that the COVAX facility is not free and so can you just explain how that process works?

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health: “The COVAX Facility is a combination of about a hundred and ninety countries that have come together to access vaccines. If you’re following the world news closely you will know that the bigger countries have dominated the vaccine and the supply of the vaccines and so what the smaller countries have done is the’ve come together and they formed under this COVAX Facility so that we as smaller countries we’re able to get vaccines. As a matter of fact through that organization we have acquired about two hundred and eighty three thousand doses for our citizens without that it would have been much more difficult.”
