Minister of Home Affairs expresses condolences after the death of ASP Fitzroy Yearwood

The Belize Police Department is in mourning following the death of Assistant Superintendent of Police, Fitzroy Yearwood. Messages of condolences and sympathy floods social media as the news spread across the country. Sharing in that feeling of loss is the Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa.

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department: “It’s when you all are ready you know ?”

Reporter: Okay so can we start with the accident last night ?

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department:  “Let me see if I have that.”

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries: “Yesterday we suffered a devastating and incalculable loss when we lost ASP Fitzroy Yearwood. As you know over the weekend we had received the news that he had suffered a massive stroke. The nation was praying for brother Fitzroy, we were all praying in the police department for his full recovery but unfortunately he passed yesterday. It is truly a massive loss not just to the department but to the entire nation because Fitzroy as you know was the public relations officer for the Belize Police Department and so at least twice a week police would enter the homes of Belizeans all across this country giving the news and the statistics regarding crime in that particular week and so he was not just a familiar face for Belizeans but there was a certain affinity, a spontaneous affinity that people had towards Fitzroy and that is truly credited to the type of person that he was not just dedicated to his job and his profession as a police officer but definitely in terms of his charisma, he was charming, he was certainly calm under fire and under pressure. I mean it can’t be easy every single week to be going through that with the media but he certainly gave off the right impression so much so that Belizeans truly loved brother Fitzroy and so it’s going to be a huge loss for us in the department and I of course want to extend my condolences not just to his police family but to his family the Yearwood family, all his brothers and sisters, his parents I extend my condolences to them.”

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department:  “Thank you. You roughed me up.”
