Minister of Home Affairs says Investigation needed into Guatemalan Armed Forces’ Alleged Involvement in Drug Trafficking

The Minister of Home Affairs says Belize needs to investigate the possibility of the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) aiding in the trafficking of drugs in the Sarstoon River. Last week, during an address to Barranco villagers, Prime Minister John Briceno claimed that the GAF wants to keep Belizeans from the Sarstoon to cover their tracks. He further stated that the Guatemalan military force was working with narco-traffickers to enable drug trafficking.  Musa explained today that if the reports have any merit, it is a very unsettling situation that needs to be investigated.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “That would be extremely disconcerting because if it is that a military force for a neighboring country is engaged in that type of illegal activity and if it is that we do have information as such that is very concerning and so we have to again increase our presence not just by the military but by the police as well because this is internal, this is inside Belizean territory if that type of activity is taking place by the GAF. We certainly have to look at that.”
