Minister of Home Affairs says recent spike in murders isn’t due to gang violence

The country’s murder rate is up, but the Minister of Home Affairs says the recent spike is not due to gang violence. The homicide figures have risen by forty percent, with a total of thirty-eight murders over the past four months. The uptick comes on the heels of a state of emergency where dozens of alleged gang members have been sent to prison. But, according to Minister Kareem Musa, while there have been several gang-related murders, the rise is being attributed to domestic disputes turned violent.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “I think the difference when you look at the number of murders last year I think we are eight above last year this time. I think that eight in my opinion would be more attributed to misunderstandings. I know that the police has a classification but mostly arising out of domestic situations which we did not have last year. And so whether you classify it as jealousy, or whether you classify it as a domestic issue or a misunderstanding those are the new types of crimes that I think has made the difference in 2024.  We definitely have seen like I said the murders this month which are two or three murders which are gang elated and we addressing those but the domestic issues really at the end of the day are the ones that are extremely difficult to predict but at the same time they’re the easier one to solve and so if you look at all those domestic misunderstandings we have identified the perpetrators in those crimes and we brought them to justice.”

The Commissioner of Police has stated that jealousy has been a driving factor in many homicides in recent weeks.
