Things have gone quiet on the recent scandal of misuse of government’s resources. At the centre of the scandal was former Government Minister Rene Montero. Albeit quiet, Prime Minister Barrow says the matter is now in the hands of the Police Department to investigate. He did add, however, that more investigations are ongoing.
Hon. Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs & New Growth Industries: “As Minister I am completely staying out of. This is not going to be any political witch hunt the way you saw like the last administration but we cannot ignore the fact that declarations have been made by individuals, very credible declarations have been made and presented to our ministry. I believe that those will be converted into police statements and the police will be investigating those matters. We have to take it seriously like any other offence and so while it is as minister I personally will have absolutely no involvement in overseeing the carriage of those matters I am aware that those are being put in the form of police statements and if action is to be taken action will be taken.”
In seeking an update on the Montero investigation, the media asked the Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “We’re considering taking charges against anybody that is found to have been misusing their position in government and there are several of them and there are several things that we’re investigating but we will make that available. You see we don’t want to prejudge, we don’t want to be boasting and say “Oh we will lock up this one.” let us do the proper investigations. I think we need to commend Minister Espat, Julius Espat, who took the time out to do a proper investigation and this is just the tip of the iceberg on the issue of the alleged misuse of government diesel, government employees, government equipment, for years and so that has gone to the police and I expect probably soon that probably charges are going to be levied against former Minister Montero.”
