Minister of Home Affairs to Personally Investigate Detention of Ahmad Family

The assertions made by Minister Elrington and investigators seem to have brought some sense of calm within the Muslim Community, especially the Ahmad family, but there is one concern that lingers. That surrounds the matter where the Ahmad Family was arrested and kept in police custody for hours. The family claims that they were never given an explanation for why they were all detained.

Nuri Mohammad – Member, Managing Committee

“It was still not completely resolved. It’s going back to their detention. If you remember that the entire Ahmed family was rudely picked up and detained for over 15 hours, all of their personal electronic equipment taken, their homes searched and no, up to today, no explanation was given to the family and the family’s spokesperson said today that they are still waiting for the commissioner of police to say why did you raid our house, why did you take up 20  members of our family including pregnant women, grandmothers and grandfathers, why did you do that and today all we got from the commissioner is that he is satisfied with what happened, that it happened under his knowledge, he acknowledged it happened but he could not even to today explain to the family why that happened.”

Minister Elrington said he has committed to personally investigate why the family was detained and present those findings to them in two weeks time.

Wilfred Elrington – Minister of Home Affairs

“When they picked them up they ought to have explained to them why they were being detained. They ought to have allowed them to have access to a phone call so that they could phone theirattorneys and let them know what is happening so that attorneys can come to their assistance and to the extent that that was denied them to my mind that was wrong. There is no two ways about it, you can have no excuse for holding people for twelve hours not explaining to them why you are detaining them and not giving them a chance to contact their legal advisors, that was wrong. Well I went on to assure them that I will find out what transpired on that occasion, I will put it in writing to them what my understanding of it was why they were held; I will send a copy to whoever they tell me to do and I will copy it to brother Imam Nuri so that he can know as well. Let me tell you there is nothing that goes on in the police force that should be a secret.”
