Minister of Tourism Visits Three Cities in the USA

Efforts to reach out to the Belizean diaspora were made by government officials through a series of town hall meetings in three major U.S. cities. Led by the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, meetings were held in Houston, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; New York, New York; and Miami, Florida between September 28 and October 3. According to the Ministry, some four hundred Belizeans attended those meetings. Along with Minister Mahler were Minister Henry Charles Usher along with Ambassadors Lyn Young and Sandhya (san-dee-ya) Murphy. Minister of State Gilroy Usher and Ambassador Carlos Fuller also joined the Belize delegation on the New York. A release from the Ministry says that the trip’s main goal was to reach out to a wide cross-section of Belizeans living in and around these cities and to exchange information and ideas that will contribute toward nation-building. The Town Hall Meetings allowed for discussions among the government officials and the Belizeans in attendance. The ministers of government provided updates on the current situation in Belize, with an emphasis on the plans for economic recovery. Plans are being made for another visit soon, with a similar town hall meeting in Los Angeles, the city with one of the largest Belizean populations in the U.S.A. It is estimated that close to three hundred thousand Belizeans live abroad.
