Minister Requena Discusses the CWU and PBL’s CBA

Last week, the Christian Workers Union (CWU) and Port of Belize Limited signed a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). It was a milestone achievement since the new CBA replaces the one signed in 2002. But while this is great news for the staff at the Port, stevedores are also waiting for a new CBA to be signed. Then there is the CBA between the CWU and the Belize City Council. Months ago, we reported on unsettled matters between both parties. Labor Minister Oscar Requena says he has hopes that differences will be ironed out so that a new CBA can be signed.

Oscar Requena, Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Local Government and Labour: “I know that there have been several discussions. There have been several meetings you know between the CWU and certainly the Belize City Council you know and again it’s work in progress. You know we will continue to support and to forge that process and we’re looking forward to something positive coming out it and that at the end of the day the workers can be satisfied but also that the employer whatever his or her concerns and contributions are that both parties can work together.”

Reporter: But what is the delay though ?

Oscar Requena, Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Local Government and Labour: “I guess it’s just, as far as I understand it is that each party has their own expectations and I really think it’s for them to really go through it and be able to come to some agreement. That’s what my understanding is.”
