Ministry of Labour working to end child labour

Countries are being urged by the International Labour Organization to eliminate child labour. This morning on the Business Perspective, the Labour Commissioner, Anne Marie Thompson said that work is being done to abolish the worst kinds of child labour.
Anne Marie Thompson – Labour Commissioner: “Child labor is an issue that we want to put on the table, we want to get it in the mainstream. The International Labor Organization, we are a member, and they have a goal to eradicate the worst forms of child labor by 2025. In fact we are ranked, all countries are ranked and our ranking has improved from minimal advancement to moderate advancement. This is very good especially for the agriculture sector like the sugarcane where they export sugar and their sugar has to be certified as being free of forced labor. We are working with our stakeholders to do joint  inspections but even before doing that we are arranging education and sensitization sessions for our colleagues including in the Social Security Board, the Immigration Department, hopefully, the Police and the Department of Human Services.”
The Labour Commissioner explained that the worst kinds of child labour include prostitution, carrying arms, and working in conditions that are hazardous.
