Ministry of Natural Resources launches BNSDI website and geoportal

The Ministry of Natural Resources has launched a platform that will make land information accessible on a national level.  Reporter Johnelle McKenzie has the story.
This morning the Ministry of Natural Resources launched a platform to make geographic information more readily accessible. The Belize National Spatial Data Infrastructure website and geoportal will be used as a data sharing mechanism and data analysis tool which could be used to analyse data that could be represented geospatially.  At this morning’s launch, Kerry Belisle, the Chief Executive Officer at the Ministry of Natural Resources said that the launch demonstrates government’s commitment to making spatial data widely accessible and usable in all sectors.
Kerry Belisle, CEO, Ministry of Natural Resources: “The BNSDI is a novel development for Belize which involves an extraordinary partnership between 33 public sector institutions at present and which harnesses state of the art technology including secure access via the internet and powerful analytical capabilities. The spatial data that is and will be in the BNSDI will be useful for decision making in many areas, just to name a few; land use planning and natural resources management which especially critical to us as we depend on tourism and agriculture, disaster preparedness response and recovery which is especially relevant at this time of year. And climate change planning and mitigation which is at the forefront of this BNSDI initiative as our country is one of the most vulnerable in the world to risks of climate change. “
Yvonne Hyde, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Economic Development and Petroleum explained that the National Climate Resilience Project is already set to benefit from the geoportal.
Yvonne Hyde, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Economic Development: “The uniqueness of this particular component is that in addition to building the road we had to take a lot of time to look at all of the factors which influenced the road which will have to be looked at to make it climate-resilient and one of the main things is the whole matter of drainage. So in designing the road we had to look at what would impact the road, we had to look at what would impact the communities along the road- so it was not just building the road, it was building it in a matter which would make this piece of the highway accessible at all times of the year regardless of what the weather features would be like. The second component is technical assistance, technical assistance in the Ministry of Works and Natural Resources, the BNSDI is perhaps the major one. The project has started but not the infrastructure part of it, we are in design phase right now, it has taken a very long time because this is the first project where we had to do all of this preliminary analysis. Let me just give an example, when we built the George Price Highway or when we built the Hummingbird Highway none of this sort of work was done because at that time there weren’t considerations about climate change, now considerations have to be looked at.”
The geoportal can also be used to detect areas that are prone to flooding in the case of a storm. Belisle added that the platform will be used as a single repository where government institutions, statutory bodies, and local authorities can input data and access data to make better decisions, to this end the different government department signed a memorandum of understanding.
