The Ministry of Agriculture signed onto a Memorandum of Understanding with the banana company, Fyffes. Cayo Correspondent, Fem Cruz was at the event and filed the following report.
Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise: “We are developing a product made from banana. Converting the unexportable banana to banana flour. Our lab in Central Farm is doing that manufacturing from banana to banana flour. It is a product that is fortified, of high nutritious value and it will be given to the children in school in Bella Vista. This is to combat the malnutrition that exists in children across the country. This is a pilot project and we are going to start to give it to children and thereafter certain amount of time is passed you go back and you evaluate the results of that pilot project to see if the children have gained weight, if they’re improved in class and so on. So I think it’s a very good start for us. As I said it is a trial it is a pilot project an we hope that it will contribute to helping children in their diets and their nutrition and that we can see the benefits.”
