Ministry of Agriculture Focuses on Diversifying Agricultural Sector

The Ministry of Agriculture continues to focus on the diversification of Belize’s agricultural sector to improve food security and access new markets. For years, local farmers have focused on traditional crops, particularly in the north where sugar cane cultivation is predominant. The Briceno Administration believes that the introduction of new agricultural methods, such as the production of value-added products, will allow farmers to make more money.  Chief Executive Officer of Agriculture Servulo Baeza spoke about an initiative being held today in partnership with the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation that seeks to improve on such efforts in the Orange Walk District.

Sergio Tillett, a Senior Project Officer at the BMDC, highlighted the importance of providing hands-on training to ensure farmers are equipped with the knowledge they need to successfully diversify their products.
