Ministry of Agriculture Holds Consultations for Drafting Seed Policy with FAO

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) engaged in consultations last Friday, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), to draft the Seed Policy. This initiative follows the recent completion of the first draft of the Belize National Agriculture and Food Policy 2024-2034, conducted under the supervision of FAO and MAFSE.  Recognizing the pivotal role of the Seed Policy in the development and transformation of the agricultural sector, both policies align with the five (5) strategic policy pillars. The ongoing consultation sessions facilitate collaboration among key stakeholders to shape a comprehensive and effective Seed Policy.  The objective of the session was to present findings and gather feedback, emphasizing the importance of this information in shaping the final Policy document.  Spearheading the consultation process is Ms. Ina Sanchez.

Taking part in the consultations were representatives from Seed Importer and Distributors, Belize Agricultural Health Authority, MAFSE technical staff, and Chief Agriculture Officer, Dr. Victoriano Pascual.   Another consultation session is planned for a later date, focusing on engaging grain producers to ensure a well-rounded and inclusive approach to the development of the policy.
