Ministry of Agriculture Looking to Expand Local Sheep Meat Market

The CEO of the Ministry of Agriculture, Servulo Baeza, chimed in on the success of the country’s sheep and mutton industry. Baeza says that while the projects conducted through the Taiwan International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF) have significantly enhanced the quality of meat that is produced, the ministry is looking to bolster the local market before catering to exports.

Servulo Baeza, CEO, Ministry of Agriculture: “We are looking at different markets both CARICOM and Mexico but I think important for us and this has been my let’s say in terms of my concern was that we do have a large local market. The tourism market demands a lot of sheep and I see because we also see the important of meat or the request for importation of meats and I see a large request for imported sheep. So we have to try to make sure that we make that connection between our farmers and the markets that we have here presently here local markets. So I would want to think that we need address first the local market and then we can go into export markets.”
