Ministry of Agriculture Seeks Solution to Bread Price Hike: Options May Include Subsidy and Price Control Changes

The Ministry of Agriculture is preparing to submit a Cabinet paper that may solve the proposed bread increase that has residents up in arms. Yesterday, the Baker’s Association announced that the price for a 16-ounce pack of bread is going up by 85 cents on Monday, December 18. However, the bakers were quickly shut down by the ministry, since bread is a controlled priced-good. The bakers say that they’ve been trying to request an increase for months and are now at a breaking point. Today, to discuss a way forward, the ministry met with the association and presented them with three options. Love News understands that GOB is looking at a 50-cent subsidy, removing the good as a control priced commodity, or moving to control only the markup price. Vic Chu, a member of the association, spoke about how the decision may go over with bakers.

Vic Wu, Representative, Belize Baker’s Association: They have promised that they will prepare a paper to present to the cabinet before the cabinet meeting. From what I understand is that they have come up with some proposals and that they will want to solve the issues but they will have to present the paper to the cabinet and leave the cabinet to decide. That’s the bottleneck of the problem. No idea. That’s what they said to us until your father noticed. We have been hearing this message for the entire year. It’s not we want to see some actions, rather we decide to move on because of the survival and the critical conditions that the entire baking industry is facing. We will see what comes out of the cabinet first.”

The paper is expected to be presented to the Cabinet next week.
