Following the launch of its reform program, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology has developed a series of videos with the theme “Making Education Work for Belize”. Part of the changes undertaken by the Francis Fonseca-led Ministry is a focus on improving and increasing learning opportunities for special education students. Doctor Neulin Villanueva expounded on how this will done.
Doctor Neulin Villanueva, Ministry of Education: “The third component of this particular domain is our special education sector. And here we want to make sure we have legislation, policies, programs and the resources needed for persons with diverse abilities to be included and can attain to their highest potential within the education system. So here’s it’s about taking every person along and so we have to look at strengthening our legislation and policies for students with diverse needs, upgrade our facilities and equipment, we need to improve on our referral, diagnostic and education services for such students. We need to increase access to specialists, therapists, diagnosticians and paraprofessionals and we need to make a great effort in creating greater public awareness for special education and diverse needs.”
