Fifty one new cases of Covid-19 have been detected in Belize with the majority of them being located in Belize City. The recent data from the Ministry of Health shows that ten persons are hospitalized with four admissions in the Intensive Care Unit. In total, there are currently four hundred and thirty seven registered persons infected with Covid-19. The death toll since April 2020 now stands at three hundred thirty eight. The recent weeks have seen a rise in positive cases and a slow increase in the number of persons getting vaccinated. Our newsroom spoke with Covid Survivor and Clinician, Dr Marvin Manzanero who is encouraging persons to get in line and get vaccinated.
Dr.Marvin Manzanero, Former Director of Health Services: “As a clinician you would hope that people would take the vaccine because it is another public health measure that is being offered and afforded to us so I don’t see a reason why we shouldn’t take it. I mean as a clinician and somebody who has gotten COVID-19, and I said it when I came out of the ICU that’s something I would not wish on anybody and I’m sure that when you see your relatives gasping for air that’s not an easy situation when you have to look at yourself in the mirror and think you’re going to die as a result then I think there’s more than ample justification for people to really make sure they get the adequate information and go and get vaccinated.”
For those persons who are hesitant to get vaccinated due to concerns of what the long term effect of the vaccination, Dr Manzanero explained that several of the ingredients in the vaccine have been tested as there have been other strains of the coronavirus.
Dr.Marvin Manzanero, Former Director of Health Services: “The elements that are contained in the vaccine you know have been tested otherwise. I mean granted you don’t know what is this specific but one is the elements have been tested in other vaccines that are given because remember this is not the only coronavirus out there and it’s not the only virus that you’re getting a vaccine for and also understand that you’re not actually getting the actual virus, you are getting a modified form to just stimulate or trick your system it tricks your defense system so that you develop an immune system. While that might be true I don’t think you can shy away from the fact that COVID-19 we have had it eighteen months and you are still seeing patients have long term effects of that so that in itself should be a situation that people can look at and say okay that’s enough reason because that is there versus thinking the vaccine may be giving me something down the road. I don’t think there is evidence to suggest that and again I wouldn’t inject myself with something or recommend it to my family if I didn’t think it was safe or where the risk is greater than the benefit.”
