Ministry of Human Development Issues Statement On Brutal Assault of Alta Vista Woman

In response to a case of domestic abuse we reported last week involving Joel Bardalez, the Ministry of Human Development and Families has issued a statement condemning the brutal assault on the victim in Alta Vista Village, Stann Creek District.

In response to a case of domestic abuse we reported last week involving Joel Bardalez, the Ministry of Human Development and Families has issued a statement condemning the brutal assault on the victim in Alta Vista Village, Stann Creek District.  The statement reads, in part, quote, “On Thursday, January 14, 2021, the nation was made aware of the extreme act of violence against a woman allegedly at the hands of her husband, Joel Bardalez.  While we cannot respond in a statement to every report of violence against women, this report is so heinous that we feel compelled to speak out and once more decry in the strongest terms the intimate partner violence which occurred.”  End of quote.  The ministry added that the efforts and plans to fearlessly tackle domestic violence are ongoing for the protection of women and families.  Bardalez was charged with aggravated assault on December 30 and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.  He appeared in court on Thursday seeking bail but that was denied.  Bardalez reportedly attacked his 28-year-old spouse with a hammer resulting in a deep chop wound to the woman’s forehead, severe swelling and injury to the right eye and a deep cut on the lower lip along with other cuts and bruises.
