Ministry of Immigration launches Amnesty Program

Today was the soft launch of the Ministry of Immigration’s Amnesty Program. The amnesty is designed to respond to the issue of migrants, who are residing in Belize illegally or are recommended asylum seekers. The Ministry says that those who qualify would be offered permanent residency with a path to citizenship. This has been welcomed by both CABEI and the UNHCR. According to Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Ramon Cervantes said more than six thousand people have made appointments to start the process.

The Ministry’s CEO, Doctor Gilroy Middleton says that unlike the application process for passports, there’s not a long queue outside.

The Ministry says that the focus of the amnesty includes managing migration, national security, economic development and humanitarian assistance.
