Minor Caught with Loaded Gun in Belize City: Police Foil Potential Crime

Over the weekend, the police were able to foil an apparent crime after busting a minor with a loaded gun in Belize City. On Sunday morning, police on patrol noticed a minor acting suspiciously while riding a bicycle in the Port Loyola area. The boy fled when he saw the officers and threw a backpack into a nearby drain. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, says cops pursued the young boy and had him retrieve the bag that contained a 9 mm pistol with six live rounds.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “Police personnel were patrolling on Malcolm Street when their attention was drawn to a male person with a knapsack who was riding a bicycle. Upon the male person seeing the police he threw the knapsack down and tried to flee from the area. He was pursued. The police apprehended him and brought him back to where the knapsack was thrown. Upon inspection of the knapsack police found a 9mm pistol along with six live rounds. The male person was taken into custody and brought to the station pending charges.”

Reporter: Sir, we understand this is a minor. Any information as released to how this very young child would have been able to get in position of a loaded firearm?

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “He is a minor and we are getting the social department along with Justice of the Peace to conduct an interview to determine where he got this firearm.”

Reporter: Have his parents been contacted?

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “Yes, his parents were contacted.”

Reporter: Does the department believe that he was maybe on the way to commit a crime, anything like that, any information relating to what he was going to do with that gun?

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “Yes, that is the information we’re getting he was taking the firearm to somebody. We have an aggressive stop and search in these areas, so that is what led to police following this person.”
