It has been four days since 16-year-old Jareth Herrera, of Orange Town, was reported missing. Herrera was last seen about 7:30 am on Friday when she left home to go to school at ITVET in Orange Walk Town. We have been following the story and spoke to Herrera’s mother, Elva Gutierrez, who explained to us that they have received many reports of where her daughter is but none of them have led to finding her. The family has become even more concerned over the safety of their daughter since she has threatened to take her own life if they try to contact her. According to the mother, the young girl does not have a cell phone and therefore it is difficult to try and contact her.
Elva Guttierez, Mother” “On Friday morning my daughter went to college but I found out she never went to school and that’s when I started getting worried. I have two kids that go to school and when I asked the boy he told me that she didn’t go to school but went to the terminal and she told him that she won’t be going back to school. We waited all night on Friday but she never showed up. She was a girl that never went out and she always went from school to home. When Saturday came we got worried and my husband went to the police station to report that she was missing. At the police station they were able to contact here through messenger where she only told my husband a few words which were if we continue to try to contact her she would kill herself. All I want to know from my daughter is if you are listening to this message is that you tell me that you are safe and in good hands and won’t do anything to her because if she is with someone there is nothing I can do but if she threatened to kill herself then I get worried. I believe the police isn’t doing anything because they keep asking us for the name of the guy but we don’t know the name of any guy. That is all the concerns that I have because it is already Tuesday and we haven’t heard anything.”
Our newsroom has been following the social media page for missing persons and found that one Jareth Herrera commented, quote, “to everyone who thinks am missing am not missing. I ran away because I was tired of living the life I had. I want to live my own life and I had already spoken to my father and told him am ok. I don’t know why they are doing this. I just want to live on my own and work for myself. I don’t want to go back home and am not going home.” End of quote. In another comment, purportedly by the missing girl, she added that she was being abused at home and that she did not like her life she was living. The post went on to explain that she has been saving money to go away for some time now. It is important to note that the profile on Facebook does not have a profile picture and whether this is actually Jareth Herrera is yet to be ascertained.////
