Many people are probably not aware that October 20 to 26 marks Dental Health Week. Dental health is probably not something considered by many Belizeans when they think of the overall health of their body. However, it is extremely important to get regular teeth check-ups. During this week, the Ministry of Health is planning to bring more awareness to the topic.
Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services: “The Dental Department in the Ministry of Health because it’s the forgotten element even though oral health affects one in every two persons globally. That’s part of what we’re trying to ramp up because the facilities to provide dental services within the public sector have been – I mean degraded over the course of time so we’re in the process for example of preparing dental chairs for all facilities across the country- I believe this year we have bought two we are still pending to procure seven more and we are starting to include more items for dental care in the annual procurement process, so it’s a topic that as many are, is of concern to us. For the entire week we have the Dental Health Department doing routine prevention activities across most primary schools in the Belize district and each dental department will do that at their level at every district level. The problem I think is staff, you don’t have that much staff in any facility, you might have a dentist and a dental health assistant so you’re really dealing with people coming into the facility as opposed to going out and doing prevention which I think I agree is something that needs to be ramped up more. There is a vast amount of activities that are carried out by the Dental Health Department and we are noticing that they are more and more requesting more supplies because you’d know that we don’t routinely do teeth extraction anymore, we try to salvage the dental piece in as much as we can so we get one more request for more supplies.”
This year’s theme is, “Brush, Floss be the Boss.”
