Belize is geographically smacked in the middle of countries that are having a hard time lowering the number of cases of Covid-19. Our eyes have been on Mexico and Guatemala that are just outside our borders and are continuing to see spikes in cases and deaths. Despite the reality, some countries including Mexico are already reopening its tourism industry. Belize reportedly is looking at these countries to see if and how it works.
Dr.Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services: “We are looking at what experiences are happening in the region in terms of three particular countries that have opened up for tourism; one is Antigua, one is St.Lucia and one is Jamaica that opened this week and all of them have protocols established which is kind of mirroring what we have started working on and it’s trying to have a controlled setting. For example when you review what Jamaica has put out in terms of their timeline process flow and what happens once you arrive at the airport the tourist and nationals follow basically the same process flow but understand that tourists may have a more controlled interaction, when you’re coming back you’re coming back to your family so I think we need to be careful in terms of what we’re going to be doing with the testing processes once that has opened. There’s no real rapid test that is standing out amongst the ones available on the market so we continue to work with partners in the region to see what it is that they’re using as a potential first screening test backed up by perhaps a PCR or a Gene Expert or the idea of perhaps having two parallel rapid test those are all notions and ideas we are looking at as we move along with testing procedures. We can’t do away with the fact that neighboring countries Mexico and Guatemala are having increasing numbers of cases they continue to go up, neighboring Chetumal is increasing significantly their numbers and that is expected to continue to rise with new target dates for their peak being perhaps towards the end of July and that could extend further.”
