MOHW Meets with the KHMH’s Board of Governors to Resolve Tensions

Last Friday the Ministry of Health met with the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of the KHMH Board of Governors. The meeting came on the heels of some tension between the two entities including the resignation of Dr. Fernando Cuellar. According to Chairman, Dr. Andre Sosa there were some draft agreements presented but would have to be approved by the hospital’s board.

Dr.Andre Sosa, Board Chairman, KHMH: “There was a meeting last week Friday between representatives from the board namely the Deputy Chair Mr. Arun Hotchandani and myself being the chair we met with the Minister of Health the Honorable Michel Chebat and with his advisory Dr.Julio Sabido who also happens to be a member of the board, an ex officio member. So the purpose of that meeting which I must say had been arranged prior to the difficulties of that week centered around finding ways to reach consensus with regards to the way to ensure that provisions would be given in a timely manner from the Ministry of Health and Wellness and indeed to rationalize the expenditures that have been made with regards to COVID that was the spirit in which the meeting was held and well we were offered an agreement which we were not able to sign on that day because well everything has to go through the board we cannot act unilaterally that’s not how boards work. We also feel that even though ministry was asking some things of us that there are also additional things that we need to get assurances that we need to get from the ministry.”

As for the details of those draft agreements, Dr. Sosa summarized the highlights.

Dr.Andre Sosa, Board Chairman, KHMH:  “In a nutshell it centers around the verification of the expenses that have been made with regard to COVID. That’s an exercise that we have done. It’s an ongoing exercise. There were other things that were asked for but we need to pass  those things to our technical team and after having looked at the feasibility of those things then we need to put it to the board. I will say though that what we have to ensure is that this process leads to not only greater transparency but also a greater autonomy, a greater independence and I personally will not do anything that compromises the independence of the board limited though it may be at this time.”
