Some of the cases reported at various public offices and businesses are among eight hundred and seventy-eight new cases reported countrywide today. That number is smaller than Monday and Tuesday, which each reported more than a thousand new infections. However, the steady uptick Belize has seen since the start of the year is just a minuscule part of the more than fifteen million infections the globe accounted for last week. The WHO’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros (teh-dros) Adhanom (ah-dah-NUM) Ghebreyesus (Ge-BREE-ye-SUS) repeated his call today to end vaccine inequity and hesitancy. He noted several countries are still below the forty-percent threshold for national vaccinations.
With today’s report, active cases have reached six thousand five hundred and forty-five, an increase of 410 percent compared to December 31, when infections were under one thousand six hundred. Most of today’s cases were in Belize City, which tallied two hundred and forty new cases. There were no new fatalities but four hundred and twenty-one people were reported to have recovered.
