MOHW Says More Nurses are Joining the Public Health Staff

The Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to recruit nurses to make up for the deficit in public health facilities. The Director of Public Health and Wellness, Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, explained that the ministry has been working closely with the University of Belize to ensure that Belizeans are being enrolled in the nursing department to receive training. She also added that Belize receives aid from Cuba to fill in the medical personnel gaps around the nation.

Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Director of Public Health & Wellness: “There are certain cadres of staff that are short. For instance, the public health nurses and the rural health nurses. The Ministry of Health is of course working with UB with the nursing program and we do have, I think we do have a cohort at this time for doing the rural health training and we have recently, I think, we have done, more than likely, can’t remember the exact number but we do have students enrolling in UB on an annual basis to try to help with the shortage of nurses.”
