Just before nine o’clock last night someone began unleashing gunshots on Antelope Street in Belize City leaving three persons injured. One of them is Jeffrey Contreras who was walking when he was shot to the right hand. The other two were mother and son, 84-year-old, Ignacia and Miguel Alpuche. Ignacio Alpuche was grazed to the back while Miguel was shot to the right foot. According to Alpuche, they were praying when the heard gunshots rang out and later realized they were hit.
“We had just completed the one year prayers, my dad passed away one year yesterday and we were praying and we were just about to go to bed that night but we heard gun shots ring out. I got up but by the time I got up I already got shot. I realized that my floor had blood. During the course of that time my mom started to scream and almost passed out, I asked her what happened and she kept saying her back, I looked at her back and nothing was there. Next thing I know the blood was gushing out so I called my nephew and told him to get home, that was about it.”
Alpuche does not believe they were the target.
“We, personally everyone cares about we have good neighbors. With all that is happening we do have good neighbors. These are people coming from other areas doing this I believe that is all I could think of because everybody, if you were here last night to see the response of the neighbors it was tremendous and its been overwhelming the support we’ve been getting.
“You don’t believe that you or your family were the target ?”
“No way. You ask anyone that knows us or our family, we are well liked and well respected family in the neighborhood, absolutely not, no way that our house was the target.”
“It was stray bullets that caught you guys?”
“I can assure that. We were in the house praying and going to go to bed.”
All three were treated last night at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and later released.
