A young man is dead following a road traffic incident in the Maya Mopan area, of Belmopan yesterday. Nineteen-year-old Carlos Romero was driving his motorcycle at the intersection of St. Jude and St. Peter Streets when he crashed into a Ford 10-wheeler. Lo Ammi-Gomez, the driver of the truck, said that he had just pulled up to the intersection when he heard a loud bang. He got out to investigate and saw a motorcycle and the rider under the truck’s wheels. Gomez, with the help of an off-duty police officer, freed the injured man and immediately contacted emergency services. Romero was transported to the Western Regional Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment. His father Jorge Luis Romero said that it appeared his son would be okay at first, but somewhere along the line, he took a sudden turn for the worse.

Jorge Luis Romero, Father of Carlos Romero (Deceased): “My daughter’s husband was there and he told me he’s okay, he’s okay. He said he was talking to me meanwhile we were coming in the ambulance and a little bit after the doctor called me in because they told me that they want to do an ultrasound and they gave us the price what it cost and I told him yes we will do it. They were preparing him at that time to take him to the lab and then the complications started. He started bleeding in his nose, instantly they took me out from emergency room and about twenty to half an hour they called me in again and they gave me the bad news that my son passed away. What my son in law told me as well is that the truck didn’t stop. Like continued and they stopped him. So automatically that is a fault, that’s against the law to move a vehicle if hit anyone or you are in an accident.”
Jorge says that police told him the paperwork for his son’s post-mortem is being prepared, and that the family should receive his son’s body early next week.
