Muffles College Excels in Caribbean STEM Olympiads: Wins Gold, Silver, and Platinum Medals

Students from Muffles College in Orange Walk are making regional headlines this week, after a stellar performance in the second annual Caribbean STEM Olympiads. The virtual event, hosted by the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF), was held from January 17 to 21. The event saw the participation of a hundred and thirty-one students between the ages of twelve to twenty-one years old, from eleven Caribbean countries. Students competed in three events in the areas of math, computer coding, and robotics. When the final scores were tallied Muffles students had secured two silver, one gold, and one platinum medal. Denzel Armstrong, one of the teachers who helped the students prepare, said that the student’s performance is especially noteworthy since the school’s coding program has only been running for two years.

Teacher Carim Ramirez said that their performance highlights the potential that exists in Belize’s youth. He noted that even the judges were impressed with the capabilities of Muffles’ students.

Notably, Giselie Garcia, entered as a solo participant and won the platinum medal in the Level 1 Computer Coding Olympiad for her hurricane preparedness project called “Protective Measures”.
