Aside from the votes of confidence issued today, perhaps another measuring stick that could be used is the expressions of interest in the upcoming municipal elections. The elections are slated for March 2024, and will see the installation of new slates for the nine municipalities across the country. With vetting of candidates currently taking place for the two major political parties, we can tell you that 125 persons have expressed interest to run under the John Briceno PUP leadership while the UDP leadership, under Moses Shyne Barrow has garnered some 90 interested individuals. Both parties are expected to present their final slates by the end of September. For the UDP, Chairman Michael Peyrefitte says they are looking to roll out conventions for the municipals in the coming weeks.
For the People’s United Party, we can tell you that that an endorsement of slates is favorable for San Pedro Town, Dangriga and Orange Walk. The municipality that has received the most applications aside from Belize City is Belmopan with six mayoral applications, followed by Punta Gorda Town with four. Additionally, the Belize Progressive Party led by Wil Maheia has confirmed with Love News that they too will be putting up a slate in the municipals.
