It seems that it doesn’t matter if you’re landlocked or somewhere on the high seas, violent crime continues unabated. On a small island about three miles northeast of Belize City, the police and coastguard are tying together the strings of a murder and missing men incident. Three men were on the island and the last time anyone heard from them was last week Friday. According to the officer in charge of the Crime Investigation Branch for Belize City, ASP Alejandro Cowo says that the owner of the island Evan Neal is missing along with one of his employees, while the unnamed watchman was found with a bullet to the head inside a latrine.
ASP Alejandro Cowo: “This morning just after 7PM Police visited Mapp Caye which is located about 3 miles Northeast of Belize City where upon arrival they observed the motionless body of a male person in an advanced state of decomposition in a latrine. Also observed on the male person was a suspected gunshot wound to the back of his head. What we understand so far is that he was along with two other persons at the camp in Mapp Caye and the last time they had heard from them was on Friday. Family members became concerned as they were trying to call the persons at the island and no one answered hence the reason they called the Coast Guard and went along with police to the location that they found the body this morning.
Reporter: “Sir any identity for that man?’
ASP Alejandro Cowo: “There is no identity up to now. Two small vessels are missing. I know that Mr. Neal is the owner of the island and the guy that was killed was one of his workers and also the other guy that is missing we believe that it is linked to other incidents that have been happening in that immediate area during the past month or month and a half. There was an incident where two guys were shot with a fishing rod and that was about 2 months ago and thereafter there was another incident I think it was about 3 weeks ago involving a male and a female.
Reporter: “Do you have any idea what will be promoting these attacks on these persons who are all stationed on these Cayes?”
Asp Alejandro Cowo: “ We suspect that it is drug-related.”
The postmortem examination took place today.
